What is NGERS?
NGERS (National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System) is an Australian Federal Government mandatory corporate reporting system for greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production. NGERS requires that every major Australian emitter and energy user register and annually report their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption.
Who needs to report?
Organisations with total annual emissions of 50,000 tonnes of GHG or with 200 Petajoules of energy usage or with a single operation with emissions of 25,000 tonnes of GHG or with 100 Petajoules of energy usage are required to register and report.
The single operation threshold approximates to:
- Electricity bills of $2m,
- 75 B -Double linehaul trucks operating 200,000 km/year,
- 1000 light commercial vehicles operating 100,000 km/year, and
- 150,000 square metres of office space.

Does NGERS only apply to Businesses?
All organisations, including all public and private and some government bodies, meeting the NGERS thresholds must register. There are over 770 organisations currently registered including Monash University, City of Greater Geelong, Epworth Healthcare, Dyson Buses and PFD food services.
Registration must be complete by August 31 and reporting must be complete by October 31.
What are the penalties for failing to report?
The Australian Government can apply penalties of up to $230,000 to organisations that fail to register or report in time, plus daily penalties of up to $11,000 for continued non-compliance. The CEO of a non-compliant corporation may also be ordered to pay a penalty up to an equal amount of that imposed upon their company for the same contravention. There are also substantial penalties for NGERS audit violations.
